Sethe is the protagonist of the novel, a proud and noble woman. She’s independent but she accepts Paul D as her companion. Her most critical characteristic is her devotion to her children. She doesn’t want her children to go through the physical, emotional, and spiritual trauma she has endured as a slave. In motherly love and protection, she tries to murder her own children to prevent them from going back into slavery. Her memories of this cruel act and brutality she suffered as a slave affect her everyday life. She spends her life attempting to avoid encounters with her past. Due to her fear of the past, she gets consumed by Beloved. Only after she faces the past head on, she’s able to live freely and peacefully in the present.
